It is without a doubt that being coined the sexiest man in Mzansi is bound to make anyone chuff. Zweli is no different. Since being named the sexiest man by Sowetan, last year, he has been appearing on every magazine baring almost all and he seems to wear his new found status with pride.
“I won’t lie, it is a blessing to be appreciated and acknowledged. Internally, I would say there is a big smile,” he gushes.
As he oozes in for the interview in the latest Audi with blasting music, you know a star is about to step out. He is tall and carries himself like a supermodel. Decked in a black ensemble, made out of black jeans and a slim black shirt, topped with designer shades, he is truly that guy that makes women gush and men envious.
But beyond the external always lies another layer that the entertainment world occasionally overlooks. “I am quite an emotional being. Believe it or not behind these muscles there is so much emotion in there,” reveals Zweli.
“I know what sadness is, I know how it feels to be let down and how it feels to cry.
Two years ago when I lost my sister, she had a heart attack. It was one of the biggest trials in my life where I had to deal with what they call true sadness. I honestly thought it was never going to end. I thought to myself, what could possibly wipe this away? And it’s still there till this very day.”
I come from a single parent home and I am grateful that I had a mother who taught us how to pray and to have a relationship with God.
Zweli is known for his role as advocate Pule on the local TV soapie, Muvhango, but he made his big acting debut as an actor on the famous Broadway show, The Lion King, playing the role of Scar. The role saw him tour Australia, Hong Kong and Europe.
The actor holds a strong demeanour that may appear as aggressive or arrogant at times, as he gets comfortable in the conversation he unveils a calm spirit that can sometimes be overshadowed by his fiery passion and confidence.
When he starts unravelling his emotional side, you thread cautiously with the fear he might just draw a line that will deter you from going any deeper. Especially considering that it’s a norm for stars not to reveal their emotional side.
“I think as a public figure it’s hard for you to show that side because we have a responsibility. When people see us they are looking for an escape and so they want to feel that sense of joy,” he explains.
Facing the dark cloud of losing his sister, Zweli says his spirituality always pulls him through any emotional turmoil.
“I come from a single parent home and I am grateful that I had a mother who taught us how to pray and to have a relationship with God. I know it may sound cliché but mina I go down on my knees and pray,” he explains.
“Some people go seek professional help but I have my relationship with God and he always comes through. There are certain things I am not comfortable talking about when I am going through them, even to my own girlfriend but God always listens.
I also have a strong sense of hope because it can’t be worse than what it was yesterday.”
He adds that he is able to dig deep and finding his inner strength in order to face another day.
“I don’t allow myself to stay in one place for a long time. I have this gift of sobbing and being sad and then snapping myself out by looking in the mirror and asking myself ‘Wait a minute, who are you? You were born for a reason, God brought you here for a reason, so move on,’ he says.
Beyond what many might think they know him as, Zweli describes himself as a very playful soul, who easily fits in and is always excited to meet new people.
“My father once said to me: “When you meet someone there is one thing you both owe to one another, and that is to meet each halfway with respect,” he shares.
Despite acting he expresses deep love for singing, going to church and spending time with family. And surprisingly he adds that he loves cooking and eating.
“I love food. People don’t understand, I eat and I eat,” he shares a rare giggle.
For the future he seems to have his guns set on conquering big dreams. Apart from living healthy and longer, he hopes to bring an Oscar or Golden globe back home one day. He adds, even though it might seems like a big dream it’s not impossible because he is not interested in easy routes.
“The Zweli Dube brand is not interested in quick cash. I don’t know how many gigs I have done already for free because I understand the steps I need to take to get there.
I wake up every day wanting to be better than I was yesterday. I am not interested in a quick buck; I am interested in a legacy, and a legacy comes with big rewards.”
