You either love or hate her, and if you fall in the latter then within minutes of witnessing her on stage or being in her presence, her infectious bubbly persona seeps its way through and instantly turns you into a super-fan.
This is exactly what happened when she sprinkled her magic on DJ Maphorisa’s summer banger, Midnight Starring, alongside Busiswa. By December she had everyone singing: “Please call future baby, future maybe, future wife.”
The Port Elizabeth-born singer, famous for her trademark moon mop, might be finally clawing her way into the hearts of South Africans, but for years she has been an alternative star, celebrated mostly in Europe than in Mzansi.
Her debut album Rabulapha! gained her an admirable following in the United Kingdom and America. Now, she is elated that her home country is finally claiming her as one of their own.
She may be finally getting her over-due applause as a popstar, but Moonchild is also winning over the fashion circuit with her eccentric fashion. Since launching her label, Moonchild Cultwear, she has become a major influencer in the fashion scene.
The fashion designer turned singer says she wants to unleash confidence with her line and inspire many to unleash their “inner superhero.”
With a year that promises to be a glorious one and with legions of admirers marvelling at her fearless persona, we spent a day with Moonchild and she let us in on the secret behind her bold confidence.
